The only real weakness of the movie is a certain repetitiveness in the middle part, but the breathtaking of the scenarios makes it equally enjoyable. Music is awesome and the moral about the importance of taking responsibility is anything but stale. Moana is reminiscent of the environmentalist soul of Ghibli Studio, with its interest in popular Asian mythology and natural spirits. Polynesian adventure that takes something from all Disney classics but is able to innovate through characters, particularly the villain. Unless you are truly tired of Disney's formula, go out and see Moana. The story has more depth than what I've come to expect.Īlthough some people may note the faults with the portrayal of Polynesian culture, you can easily overlook this and appreciate Disney for recognizing it in the first place. The animation is absolutely gorgeous, beautifully detailed, and a joy to look at. The performances, especially by The Rock and newcomer Auli'i Cravalho are amazing, although some may not be happy with the American accents. It is a must-watch and is further proof that Disney movies are continuing to get better.įirst of all, the music (composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton fame) is incredible, consisting of sing-along songs that could easily compete with the ones in Frozen. I instantly fell in love with this film, and will definitely re-watch it.Īlthough it may seem like the typical "hero's journey" I mentioned before, this movie is very different. This movie shows how far Disney has come, and I am glad to say that they no longer stand in Pixar's shadow. The music is excellent, and the titular protagonist is very human. It exceeded my expectations by being more than just an average "hero's journey" flick.
